Auckland Grapples with Canine Parvovirus Outbreak Amidst Rising Puppy Number

Auckland is currently facing a concerning outbreak of canine parvovirus, a situation intensified by the surge in puppy numbers post-Covid, according to local veterinarians. The virus, known for its resilience in the environment, can persist for months to years, leading to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, and proving fatal for unvaccinated dogs.

Warmer temperatures exacerbate the virus spread, with some vets reporting a weekly caseload surpassing what they typically see in an entire summer. Rachel, the manager at Māngere Veterinary Clinic, notes a significant increase in calls for suspected parvovirus cases over the past eight weeks, emphasizing the particularly aggressive nature of the current strain.

The survival chances for affected animals this year are less than 50%, with the strain proving lethal at an alarming rate. Financial constraints hinder many owners from seeking treatment, as affordability becomes a barrier to addressing the outbreak effectively.

The aftermath of Covid lockdowns is contributing to the problem, with an influx of dogs that are neither desexed nor vaccinated, propelling the virus's spread. Auckland Council data indicates a 15% increase in the city's dog population since 2019, now totaling 128,645, with potentially an additional 70,000 unregistered dogs.

The New Zealand Veterinary Association points out that the surge in unvaccinated dogs, resulting from an increase in unwanted litters during and post-Covid, is a significant factor in the parvovirus spread. Cost-of-living pressures may lead to skipped routine vaccinations, adding to the problem.

Veterinarians, like Jolin Chia from Lynfield, witness a surge in cases, with owners often unable to afford the pricey treatment, which can exceed $1000 a day. Lack of awareness and, in some cases, misinformation about vaccinations contribute to the challenge.

SPCA's general manager for animal services, Dr. Corey Regnerus-Kell, emphasizes the severity of the outbreak, stretching available resources. Financial constraints lead to untreated dogs, suffering from parvovirus, underscoring the need for public awareness and assistance programs.

In Hawke's Bay, the SPCA reports similar parvovirus cases among stray dogs, necessitating euthanasia due to the severity of symptoms. The organization urges owners to vaccinate their dogs, especially puppies, to prevent the virus's spread and protect vulnerable animals.
